A group of YouTube TV subscribers has filed an antitrust lawsuit against The Walt Disney Company alleging they are forcing consumers to pay more than they should for streaming live TV online.

According to the deadline, the plaintiffs who come from four states say Disney forcing streamers like YouTube TV to include ESPN is inflating their prices more than necessary. A 82 page folder filing in the U.S. District Court in San Francisco alleges that Disney’s control over ESPN and Hulu allows the company to “inflate market prices by raising the prices of its own products” and also to “set a price floor.” YouTube TV is the largest live streaming pay TV service, with over 5 million subscribers.

The lawsuit continues “Together, these carriage agreement mandates – which now cover all of Disney’s major competitors in the SLPTV market – allow Disney to use ESPN and Hulu to price floor the SLPTV market and inflate prices across the market by raising the prices of its own products. And that’s exactly what Disney has done in the past three years since it took operational control of Hulu. Since Disney has acquired operational control of Hulu in May 2019, prices in the SLPTV marketplace, including for YouTube TV, doubled. This dramatic market-wide price inflation was driven by Disney’s own price hikes for Hulu + Live TV, and directly followed Disney’s competitor-by-competitor negotiation of new SLPTV distribution deals during this period.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages and demands a jury trial rather than arbitration or settlement. Last year, a dispute between Disney and Google caused their programming to disappear from YouTube TV for two days before being restored. Following the loss of Disney programming, Google was expected to reduce the price of YouTube TV from $64.99 to $49.99 per month, but did not.

The American technology conglomerate Microsoft has announced a new view dedicated to sign language for its Teams video conferencing platform. According to The Verge, this new feature allows sign language users to select up to two videos of other participants to star in a central location, allowing designated signers to be visible throughout the meeting. Microsoft says Teams users can enable the feature for all meetings. or on a meeting-by-meeting basis, which is particularly useful for non-hearing-impaired signers. If they are internal to the company, sign language interpreters can be pre-assigned before the start of a meeting. However, external interpreters can only be assigned during a meeting via the Accessibility tab in the app settings. Microsoft does not provide sign language interpreters for Teams meetings, The Verge reported. Signer priority video streams can still be pinned without interfering with them as they default to the highest quality uncropped ratio. When a presentation is shared, the priority stream changes, but it still retains its larger size and higher video quality, making it easier to identify other participants. The sign language view is also personal to the user — other call participants will not be alerted or have their own Teams view changed. Microsoft also announced a new sticky preferences pane for Teams.

Traditional owners did not need to be consulted on a massive gas project off the Tiwi Islands because they were not people with relevant interests, one gas company argued.

Santos is appealing a landmark Federal Court decision, in which Judge Mordecai Bromberg ruled that the offshore gas regulator should not have approved environmental plans for drilling in the Barossa gas field, 265 km to the north -west of Darwin.

Judge Bromberg in September ordered the cancellation of the regulator’s approval and a halt to drilling.

Santos launched his appeal in the Federal Court in Melbourne on Tuesday, arguing that the ruling judge failed to properly consider what constituted a “relevant person” who needed to be consulted.

Santos attorney Christopher Horan KC told the court that under the regulations, a relevant person was someone whose “duties, interests or activities” could be affected by the drilling.

Mr Horan said that while the traditional owners’ connection to the Sea Country was “genuine and real”, it did not constitute the type of legal “interest” detailed in the legislation.

A community also did not exist as a legal entity, so Santos would have to identify individual people, Horan said.

Identifying and consulting every person would be impractical for Santos and difficult for the regulator to ensure everyone was consulted, the attorney said.

As the hearing broke for lunch, the traditional owners of the Tiwi Islands and their supporters gathered outside the Federal Court in Melbourne.

They called for a halt to the gas project, noting that they would continue to fight regardless of the outcome of Santos’ appeal.

“We still live off our land,” Antonia Burke told the rally.

“We are the cultural giants and we will not be intimidated or ignored by the federal government or by these mining companies.”

Federal Greens Senator Lidia Thorpe was also present at the rally, telling the crowd they should fight instead of letting the gas projects go ahead.

“Sea Country has song lines, and so does Country,” she said.

“It’s important for all of us. When it’s good, we go.”

The appeal hearing before Federal Court Justices Susan Kenny, Debra Mortimer and Michael Lee continues.

Republicans have nominated for statewide office a slate of Trump-endorsed candidates who have promoted lies about the 2020 election as a centerpiece of their campaigns. All followed their Democratic rivals in the early election results, which reflected ballots received before the election. These margins were expected to decline as more ballots were counted.

Hobbs and other Democrats told supporters they were encouraged by early returns, but warned a long count was ahead.

“I am confident that the counties administering this election conducted a free and fair election, and their results will be accurate,” Hobbs told supporters gathered in Phoenix. “But it will take time, so be prepared for a long evening and a few more days to count.”

Mail-in ballots returned Tuesday or shortly before have not yet been reported and will be counted in the coming days.

With wafer-thin margins between parties, it often takes days to learn the results of key races in Arizona, and it’s not uncommon for the leading candidate on election night to end up losing when all the votes are counted.

Problem with vote tabulation machines at about 25% of polling places in Arizona’s most populous Maricopa County drew criticism on social media, but officials said every vote would be counted.

The election comes as Biden battles the endorsement backlog and Trump strongly hints that he will run again in 2024.

With the stakes so high, Arizona has been at the center of efforts by Trump and his allies to cast doubt on Biden’s victory with false allegations of fraud. Trump-endorsed candidates who deny the legitimacy of Biden’s victory have won the GOP primaries top-to-bottom and could take control of offices central to the election.

Nine in 10 voters say the future of democracy in the United States is a factor in their voting decisions, according to AP VoteCast, a large survey of more than 3,200 voters in Arizona. They were evenly split between the two gubernatorial candidates. About 4 in 10 people say this is the most important factor.

A majority – around 7 in 10 voters – say they are confident that votes will be accurately counted in this year’s election. Of those voters, about 6 in 10 supported Hobbs. Of the roughly one-quarter who said they weren’t confident the votes would be accurately counted, about 8 in 10 backed Lake.

Lake predicted she would close the gap and overtake Hobbs, reminding her supporters that she was down in early GOP primary returns before overtaking her establishment-backed rival as more ballots were counted.

“God didn’t put us in this fight because it was going to be easy,” Lake told supporters at a GOP celebration in Scottsdale. “Nothing we had to go through was easy.”

She condemned the printer incident in Maricopa County, calling it “another stark reminder that we have incompetent people running the show in Arizona” and promising that her “first line of action is to restore the honesty of elections in Arizona”.

Hobbs framed the gubernatorial race as a contest between sanity and chaos, calling Lake “seriously dangerous” and calling attention to Republican opposition to abortion rights.

Hobbs, a social worker before turning to politics, was weighed down by her decision not to debate Lake. She ran a cautious campaign, largely sticking to scripted and choreographed public appearances.

Lake brought people dressed as chickens — and sometimes live hens — to campaign events to argue that Hobbs was afraid to confront her. She also pointed to a successful discrimination lawsuit brought by a black woman who was fired as a policy adviser to the state Senate Democrats when Hobbs was the Senate’s top Democrat.

Lake is well known across much of the state after anchoring the evening news in Phoenix for more than two decades. She has portrayed herself as a fierce critic of the mainstream media, which she says is unfair to Republicans.

Polite on camera and at ease in front of a crowd, Lake attracted enthusiastic audiences and garnered international media attention.

She was endorsed by Trump, who admired her – hardly exaggerated – ability to answer any question with a message about election manipulation. Lake repeatedly refused to say she would accept the election results if she lost.

Nearly half of Arizona voters say the economy is the most important issue facing the country, according to AP VoteCast. And nearly all voters said inflation was a factor in their votes, with about half saying it was the most important factor.

For about two-thirds of Arizona voters, the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, the decision which recognized a constitutional right to abortion, was an important factor. Those voters overwhelmingly preferred Hobbs to Lake.

Federal and state election officials and Trump’s own attorney general said there was no credible evidence the election was tainted. The former president’s allegations of fraud have also been flatly dismissed by the courts.
