Jeff Beck reveals details of album with Depp
Johnny Deppwho won a near-total victory in a defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard last week, and English guitarist Jeff Beck will release an album of mostly covers next month after going on stage together.
Called “18”, the 13-track album will be released on July 15.
“It’s almost like you’ve gone through a record store and you’ve gone from genre to genre,Beck told Reuters on Friday, saying they started working on the album at Depp in France.
“There’s a couple Motown, there’s a couple Beach Boy covers on … Sounds pretty good for a home recording. Depp and Beck have been recording music since 2019 for the album, which also features two original songs by Depp, who has his own band, the Hollywood Vampires. A song is about actress and inventor Hédy Lamarr.
“We slowly built songs that we love. We didn’t really design,” Beck said.
“He has…a very distinctive (voice) and he gets music and I hope I’ve allowed him to open up to songs that he wouldn’t otherwise be interested in.”
Beck said: “I hope I helped him a bit to have some kind of understanding and closeness and a joke, and to keep having fun.”
Beck was speaking on the sidelines of a blue plaque event honoring the late guitarist Jimi Hendrix at the London Hard Rock Hotel. The building was formerly the Cumberland Hotel, where Hendrix often resided before his death in 1970.
“It was one of the biggest voids left in rock ‘n’ roll,” says Beck.
